Yesterday, guests at the Bascom Hill Society showcase luncheon enjoyed a wonderful glimpse into the Year of the Arts with University of Wisconsin-Madison students and faculty.
Professor Norma Saldivar was the featured speaker; she is professor of directing, director of the graduate directing program, executive director of the UW Arts Institute and Year of the Arts Co-chair. Professor Saldivar spoke about the performances, exhibits, symposia, public events, publications, distinguished visiting speakers and online resources that will be part of the Year of the Arts from now through August 2011. She talked about the many activities and the importance of art as a learning resource.
Professor Saldivar recently directed the University Theatre’s production of “The Grapes of Wrath,” and she brought with her several student actors who performed a scene from this powerful, classic novel by John Steinbeck and adapted for the stage by Frank Galati.
After the performance, the students participated in a question and answer discussion with guests.
