How does engaging in well-defined problem solving affect one’s ability to handle more ambiguous tasks? That was the question posed by Moreau. To find the answer, she conducted a series of experiments that asked subjects to build with Lego blocks. Some subjects were asked to assemble kits with instructions included, and others were told to “build something.” Then she measured the subjects’ performance on subsequent creative tasks. What she found was that subjects who tackled the well-defined problem performed worse on subsequent creative tasks than those who built whatever they felt like building. Put your imagination to the test during this enlightening presentation.
