Faculty leaders at the UW Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics have set their sights on the future of clean energy. Through a compelling opportunity to leverage the department’s expertise and cutting-edge facilities, the department will be able to focus on innovative fission and fusion projects in nuclear engineering. Realta Fusion — a newly developed startup at UW–Madison — is aiming to develop the most accessible and least complex path to commercially sustainable fusion energy. With the assistance of private donor investments, a collaboration of this proportion would lay the groundwork for the Realta team to design a prototype that could change the future of nuclear energy.
“The sharpened focus on fusion within the department leverages UW–Madison’s already prestigious position as one of the top fusion engineering programs,” says assistant professor Ben Lindley. “We’re enthusiastic to forge a lasting partnership between Realta and the department to make a commercial fusion plant a reality, do groundbreaking science, help develop the fusion workforce, and benefit the state of Wisconsin.”
