Predictions of North Korea’s demise have been widespread for many years, but decision-makers and analysts often underestimate the power of tyranny. Therefore, even with the global collapse of Communism three decades ago, the Kim regime’s hold on power seems secure. Why is this so? And how is this possible? Gain insights from the UW’s David Fields, a U.S. diplomatic historian who studies this region and has expertise in drawing lessons from the United States’ relationship with “middle powers” such as North Korea.
