In 2020, a year after joining the UW, Associate Director of Bands Corey Pompey confronted a new challenge: the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of both the spring concert and football season. It was disappointing, but Pompey had a method for coping: “We do it through hope.” With optimism, passion, and Badger fortitude intact, the UW Marching Band rehearsed with 25 students at a time — physically distanced, masked, and with instruments covered for safety. On March 24, 2021, members of the UW Varsity Band were overjoyed to attend an outdoor, large-group practice for the first time since the pandemic began.
With its 300 members in 26 ranks, the UW Marching Band is a force like no other, and donor support is a part of their success. On average, there are about 224 marchers on the field at a time, and their collective sound and verve is unforgettable. Its legacy is steeped in the kind of tradition that drew Pompey to Madison, the tradition of being one of the top marching bands in the country.
Music is a powerful uniter. It builds enthusiasm for Badger athletics and spreads vitality on campus. In the last year, private support through annual giving has helped to maintain performance quality, showmanship, and energy at the highest levels. It also ensures the longevity of this important group and its leadership. While Pompey has missed playing for the boisterous crowds at Camp Randall, he missed his students most of all and looks forward to a time when everyone can safely be together again. Because of you, our generous community of donors, his aspirations will become a reality.
