O’Connor will unravel the history, pathology, and impact of the Zika virus in this timely talk. The Zika virus is spread to humans primarily through the bite of a mosquito. Although people are rarely hospitalized for Zika virus disease, it has been linked to serious birth defects in infants. The virus is having a profound impact on Brazil, where there has been an epidemic of Zika-related birth defects. In addition, the virus threatens to affect that country’s upcoming Olympic games.
