Consumer interest in organic products continues to grow in the United States. Sales of organic products have seen double-digit growth for the last decade, with 81 percent of American families now buying organic products. Dr. Silva’s research focuses on production practices to enhance the productivity and profitability of organic and sustainable cropping systems, including vegetables, row crops, and pasture-based systems. The two main research areas of her program include enhancing soil health in organic systems and developing and identifying vegetable varieties that perform well under organic management. Learn how Wisconsin has climbed to second in the nation in the number of organic farms, and how it continues to be a leader in organic agriculture.
