Internationally renowned for research in atmospheric science, Professor Steve Ackerman is director of the UW-Madison’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. He is credited with enhancing Wisconsin’s reputation as the birthplace of satellite meteorology and fostering advances in weather prediction that save lives and livelihoods worldwide. He also is committed to public science, has helped create weather exhibitions across the country and is one of the Weather Guys at Wisconsin Public Radio and the Wisconsin State Journal. He won the 2005 Dorothy Howard Prize for Folklore and Education with his Wisconsin Weather Stories project for K-12 students.
