Community Funds

We encourage departments to set up community funds to cover department activities that cannot be paid for from other discretionary funds.

Department members usually contribute to community funds, knowing their gifts can be used for morale building activities and for event expenses including alcohol.

Payments from Foundation funds must be to, or for, the benefit of the University.

The Letters and Science Sense of Community Fund, for example, is designated “specifically for the use of the Dean of the College of Letters and Science for purposes that he or she deems important in establishing and reaffirming a sense of community among the faculty, staff and students of the College.

“Uses can include, but are not limited to, receptions and entertainment or costs associated with meals and refreshments.”

The DoIt Community Fund is designed specifically for the use of the Director of DoIT for purposes he/she deems important in establishing and reaffirming a sense of community among the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the Department.

“Uses can include, but are not limited to, receptions and entertainment or costs associated with meals and refreshments.  This includes functions related to retirements (excluding retirement gifts), welcome receptions, and any other occasion that the Director considers to be team or morale building in nature or that allows the Department to function as a productive community.”
