Thirty years ago, the United States might have been able to orchestrate events in Syria, says Professor Jon Pevehouse, who will discuss implications of the current civil unrest. Today, he sees players outside of U.S. control. A political scientist with a specialty in diplomacy and international conflict, Pevehouse will explore the often contradictory goals
of establishing stability and promoting democracy. He also will examine the fear that a breakdown in Syrian governance could lead to the kind of chaos that gave rise to the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and direct threats to U.S. security. Pevehouse’s most recent book, “While Dangers Gather,” examines how Congress and the President have historically approached foreign intervention.
